The star of this great collection, hands down, is the sander—-we love it. It’s cordless, of course, but even better, it does the work of three separate sanders: a random orbiter, detail, and finish sander. Ingenious. Transition is fast and easy, and it’s really a pleasure to use—-comfortable and lightweight, and excels at everything from serious stock removal to the finest detail. A close second, though, is the smart hand saw that’s as simple to use as the good old-fashioned kind, just without the elbow grease, powering you through everything from wallboard and plastic to tree limbs without flinching. The drill/driver’s removable chuck lets you switch quickly from drill to driver mode in a second, and when you detach the chuck, you’ll find a clever ready-to-use driving bit. There’s on-board storage for six more bits, too, a feature we always like. We’re never happy when we have to wrestle with a battery, but these put up no fight, going on and off surprisingly easily. The stud finder and flashlight are handy to have around; the sensor has both visual and sound alerts when it detects the edge of a stud, even in a wall that’s up to 3/4-inch thick. Everything fits into a nice, rugged bag for transport and storage. Bought singly, you’d pay a whole lot more than this package price, so we think this is a great deal on a dependable stable of basic tools.–Kris Jensen-Van Heste
